Concept and Imaging was one of my favorite classes. I finally learned how to use a tablet and painted for the first time in Photoshop.
The teacher went over the hot keys for painting in Photoshop and then we did some concept art exercises that I thought were very helpful!
The topics were:
- any animal
- draw a basic shape and turn it into a character
- draw a character painting white on black
- old fashioned monster
- crippled but cute
The bear was the first exercise and the crippled but cute rabbit was the last.
Then the class voted on one design to elaborate. Old fashioned monster was chosen from mine.
And by next class I came up with Professor Bare! (Looked at a lot of reference from Indiana Jones.)
Here's a 3-point lighting study of a sphere. Painted in Photoshop.
Here are the stages:
ambient
plus key
plus fill
plus rim
plus table bounce color
plus rim light color
plus blemishes
Here, we took an ambiently lit photograph (I just googled an image) and used a masking layer to paint light. Then we can change the look of it using adjustment curves.
This is the mask I painted to create an indication of lighting.
Here's a character concept from my musky ox love story (will be more of him later as seen with my blog header). Got the idea from looking at pictures of these animals. During rutting season, male musk oxen attract females through their musky scent. So, I thought, what if a female musk ox is actually repelled by the musky scent of an eager male musk ox. The story has changed, but I love this male musk ox character.
Here's a barn in a northern cold region where spring is melting away the snow. (Was still thinking about musk oxen in Alaska where they have musk ox farms.)
